Who is your computer recycler? “The highest bidder…”

The title to this article is: Who is your computer recycler?  “The highest bidder…”  because we feel that this is a growing issue within some organizations.  During these tough economic times businesses are resorting to cost cutting and revenue generating ideas one never would have dreamed up in the past.

Dallas and Fort Worth area businesses, financial institutions, medical institutions and more are resorting to auctioning off much of their e-waste as their disposal method of choice.  When they do so they are often blinded by the rewards of this process and fail to see the risks which could potentially bring down the entire business.

When the equipment ends up at an auction facility many times the security aspect of the recycling process takes a back seat.  This neglect of security can lead to a mountain of problems.  If an inexperienced IT agent for a financial institution is responsible for disposing of equipment, and elects to auction the equipment off, he may forget to check for the hard drive inside the photocopier before it is sent off to auction.  At the auction the highest bidder could buy this copier and use it for its intended purpose, or a criminal could wind up acquiring the much more valuable information off the hard drive which lies tucked away within the copier.  The information they have access to is limited to any and all documents scanned on that copier including drivers licenses, social security cards, birth certificates, tax documents, banking information, client or customer info, and much more.

It is always recommended to deal with information in a respectable and secure manner.  The importance of choosing an e-waste recycling company or company to dispose of your electronic equipment in a secure manner is insurmountable.  We cannot stress the importance of dealing with the issue of security first, and the issue of recycling second.

Once the security aspect is taken care of, you’ve wiped your hard drives, or removed them altogether.  You are now tasked with disposing of the equipment.  When the item is sold at auction there may be remaining asset tags which identify the company of origin.  The purchaser may decide they do not want the item any more and dispose of the item improperly with the originating company’s asset tag on the item, which could potentially incriminate them should the equipment be discovered not properly disposed of.

In a time of uncertainty one must be certain their equipment is handled securely and recycled responsibly by a company who is looking out for the best interest of the customer.  Please recycle with a company that offers to physically destroy your data and destroy and remove all asset tags.

Can you recycle this? Yes, even an electric lawnmower.

Here at Computer Crusher Recycling LLC we are asked many questions on a daily basis.  Questions range from CRT recycling processes, to when we will be in the Dallas or Fort Worth areas, and even the occasional question about the availability of an odd or end for some dated computer.  If there is one question that reigns king over all of question-dom it would be “Can you recycle _____?”

The questions of if we can recycle a particular item is resoundingly the winner of the war of questions, and often we surprise many a potential customer with a resounding “Yes,” to an item they may have though impossible to recycle.  I will be using this title and create a series of some of the wackiest items we’ve said yes to and have actually recycled.

If you are ever in doubt if we can responsibly recycle your item, please call us (940-380-0091) or use our contact form.  Now we can get onto our oddball item.

Q: Can you recycle an Electric Lawnmower?

A: YES!

Cherrypicking Recyclers: Call us first the first time.

It is a seemingly disappointing trend of negative customer service in the computer electronics recycling industry especially during the last couple of weeks.  In the last two days we have had two separate clients call us with the same exact request: “Can you come and get what the other guys left behind?”  Our resounding answer is always an emphatic “yes!”  We follow this with an even more emphatic “you should call us first next time.”

We make it our goal to recycle any and all computer electronics e-waste in a responsible manner.  We do not come pick the most pristine equipment, or most valuable scrap, we take what the client needs us to take, we do so quickly, and we get out of the customers way.  We remove the TVs that are too large for the other guys, or the CRTs that are too numerous to deal with.  We take printers, copiers, scanners and much more and recycle it all.  We will even recycle the paper that you forgot in the printer tray as well as the boxes we remove the equipment in.

Computer Crusher Recycling is here to serve the customer, we are here to say yes, and we are here to be the last call you ever need to make for your recycling needs.  Please visit our contact form here, or give us a call at 940-380-0091.  If you are a current customer and would like to sound off on this issue, feel free to use the contact form and we will publish your thoughts.

Data Stored in Unexpected Places:

What do the following items have in common?

  • PC
  • Laptop
  • Server
  • Copier
  • Network Equipment

All of the devices and many more can contain hard drives.

Hard drives contain an extraordinary amount of data which can range from harmless files and PDFs to invaluable customer, client, and business information.  Many are quite aware of the consequences of sensitive data and information leaking out from a computer, laptop, or server.  These devices are used every day so their content of exclusive information is quite well known, but what about the other devices?

It is not as well known that devices as innocuous as photocopiers, scanners, and even some printers may have hard drives that log every document that goes through the device.  Have you ever scanned an employees drivers license or even made a copy of someones’ social security card?  All of this information could be potentially stored on the device ripe for the picking by those less than honest individuals.

I’ll allow you a little break to view this video about digital photo copiers and their hidden data.  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/04/19/eveningnews/main6412439.shtml

After watching that enlightening video, think twice about what you photocopy at locations such as FedEx or Kinko’s stores, but more importantly as a business think twice about who recycles your photocopiers.  Photocopier recycling should be done by companies that are used to handling such devices and are willing to provide certificates of destruction.  Do you research to prevent your organization or company from being burned like those at the Buffalo Police Department.

Vulnerable Printers? May be time to replace those old HPs.

Exclusive: Millions of printers open to devastating hack attack, researchers say.

According to the article HP lasterjet printers manufactured before 2009 are vulnerable to this exploit.  It essentially allows a hacker to gain control of a printer hooked up to the internet by implementing custom firmware through a compromised print file.  Once control is gained every document may be recorded and sent to the hacker.  There may be no way t o determine if the device is contaminated, and recovery may be impossible.  A hacker would likely block future installs or updates once access is gained.  This could lead to the necessity of scrapping hundreds of thousands, if not millions of HP laserjet printers.

Should your company decide these risks are too great to endure, and you do upgrade, please be sure to responsibly recycle the old machines.  Printers must be responsibly recycled in the same way computers and CRT monitors must.

Full Circle Data Protection: The Beginning

It is quite apparent to all that Computer Crusher Recycling LLC is first and foremost a data security and destruction company as well as a full service computer recycling firm and e-waste disposal business.  With our intense focus on data security we wanted to take the time to point out an often overlooked portion of the data security piece of the corporate and home puzzle.

When a computer hard drive goes bad or is upgraded it is often stored until enough quantity amasses warranting a disposal call to us.  This interim time for these pieces can be critical if the drives and storage devices are not stored in a secure manner.  If the drives are not locked up or protected by some sort of security device it could be quite tempting for some of these pieces to walk away.  When these drives and data storage pieces disappear into someone else’s hands they have control of potentially disastrous corporate and client information.

We have stumbled across a novel and complete solution for just this issue in a company called Fire Proof Safes Shop.  They offer a series of lines of various data safe storage units.  These units would help prevent the physical theft of data storage pieces until they can be properly disposed of.  These safes are also a great place to store current and useful data storage pieces to protect from potential damage from the elements such as fires.

Fire Proof Safe Shop

Be sure and protect your data before you call Computer Crusher, because once we get there you can be confident your data is securely and totally destroyed.  Coupling a secure data storage safe with certified on site physical destruction is a great way to maintain confidential corporate and client information.

Why does Computer Crusher Recycling LLC Exist?

Computer Crusher Recycling LLC Official Logo - The secure way to recycle computer electronics.

In order to answer this question we must first look at why recycling exists.  Recycling exists for the sheer necessity to preserve the functionality, growth, and future of the human race.  We all are quite well aware that resources such as gold, gems, oil, coal, and more are all finite and limited resources.  These resources once tapped completely will be decimated forever.  One way to ensure these resources are available for human needs in the future is to reduce the quantity used in current products.

We can reduce the quantity of these finite resources in consumer and industrial goods and products; but, what should be done about those products that are in existence yet are no longer functional or practical.  This is where recycling of old, broken, or obsolete materials comes into play.  Older materials utilize more of the scarce resources available than more current and efficient products.  A responsibly recycled computer from ten to fifteen years ago could in theory provide the rare and limited resources to build exponentially more efficient and newer products.  Recycling for the purpose of producing new products is one of the reasons to responsibly recycle.

[EPA Reduce & Reuse]

Another reason recycling exists is to preserve the current climate, environment, and health of the planet and its inhabitants.  Landfills while necessary at this stage of human existence are becoming more and more unnecessary for items which can be recycled responsibly.  Landfills have a limited space, and typically items that should be recycled take an infinitely long amount of time to break down, causing the landfill to fill faster.  Health and safety is yet another reason to recycle as there are many carcinogens and poisonous materials found within many recyclable products.  To prevent these toxic materials from leaching into the soil and water table, we must recycle these materials.

[IPO Recycling and other efforts to save landfill space]

Now that we have established the reasons and the need to recycle, we can begin to explain why Computer Crusher Recycling LLC exists in the first place.  Computer Crusher Recycling (CCRC) was established to simplify the recycling process for businesses and residents alike.  It is quite easy to take a computer to a designated recycling facility, but it leaves many questions.

  1. What happens to my data?
  2. Who has access to my data?
  3. Will my materials be shipped over-seas?
  4. Will you reuse my hard drive?

The confident and secure answers to these questions and more lay within the core that is Computer Crusher Recycling LLC.  CCRC was established as “the secure way to recycle your computer electronics.”  We began our company by being the first in the Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex area to provide a definitive answer to the data security questions.  CCRC began offering on site physical hard drive destruction for its customers.  This put a stake in the questions of what happens to my data or who has access to it.  Clients and customers data would be physically destroyed before we even left their facility.  This allowed the customers to confidently know their data, their customer’s data, or personal family information could not be compromised while still allowing them to confidently recycle their e-waste.

[Computer Crusher Certified Data Destruction]

With all the data accounted for and secure CCRC can now begin the recycling process to make what was once old new again.  We begin with a detailed check in process which allows us to notify the customer exactly what equipment was removed from their facility.  The equipment is then graded in as either reuse or recycle.  Reusing materials allows us to extend the life cycle of products, reducing the need for new products, which in turn reduces the need for future products to inevitably be recycled.  Recycled products are sorted and torn down by technicians with their components sorted by type.  Once the materials are sorted they are processed for the rare materials which will ultimately be reused in raw material form to produce new products for businesses and consumers.  All materials are sorted under a zero landfill policy and handled under ISO and EPA oversight.

It can be said with the utmost confidence that Computer Crusher Recycling LLC exists for the following statement:
